New York State Department of Motor Vehicles requires all new drivers successfully complete the 5-hour Pre-licensing course before they are allowed to schedule a driving test to obtain their driver license. Primo Driving School’scertified professionals provide students withthe formal opportunity to learn the basic rules of the road, safe driving principles, defensive driving skills, and other factors impacting their driving ability. Students receive a pre-licensing course certificate (MV-278) upon successful completion of this course.You must provide the certificate number when you schedule your road test.

The course goals are as follows:

  • To reduce injuries, crashes, traffic violations, and property damage.
  • To help students become responsible drivers.
  • To learn about the dangers of fatigue, alcohol and other drugs on driving ability.
  • To develop a positive attitude towards safe and defensive driving.
  • To encourage and promote safety belt and child safety seat use.
  • To learn how to fit safely into the transportation system with other highway users.
  • To familiarize students with the “rules of the road.”

Are you ready?

Driving is a risk-taking activity! Primo Driving School helps to eliminate the risk involved in driving.We go the distance with you to ensure you are reallybeing prepared. Primo Driving School not only enables you to become a safer and smarter driver but also protects others on the road by following the rules of the roads and tries to minimize the mistakes that are made while driving.We’ll cover entering traffic, controlling your lane position and speed, yielding and right-of-way, understanding traffic control devices, making turns, navigating intersections and traffic circles, merging on and off highways and all the parking techniques you’ll need to pass your driving test.

We want you to qualify for a license on your road test. Our driving program is designed to help you prepare for your test the right way, and give you a preview of what the test is like. In general, The DMV recommends that you get at least 30 hours of practice, with at least 10 hours in moderately heavy traffic. Our instructors will not just take you for a ride; they will help you prepare for the test, each time they take you out for a lesson. The DMV wants students to pass their test.

Checklist for the day of your road test

The day of your road test, you must be on time.

  • arrive up to 30 minutes before the time of your test
  • if you are late, the license examiner may need to reschedule your road test

Here’s what you need to bring the day of your road test

☐Your photo learner permit

☐Glasses or contacts, if your permit indicates you need corrective lenses

☐Your original Pre-licensing Course Certificate (MV-278) or Student Certificate of Completion (MV-285), copies are not acceptable

☐If you are under 18, a Certification of Supervised Driving (MV-262) completed by your parent or guardian – this must be given to the license examiner each time you take a road test

☐A driver age 21 or older who has a license valid to operate the test vehicle

☐A vehicle to drive during the test that hasvalid registration and inspection operates properly and is in clean condition

If you are taking a motorcycle road test, you will also need

☐A properly operating, registered and inspectedthe motorcycle

☐A properly operating, registered and inspected motor vehicle and a driver with a valid driver license to transport the license examiner during your road test

Your Photo Learner’s Permit and your 5-Hr Class certificate.
If you are 17 years old and possess a blue card, give it to the examiner, or you must have your 50-hour Certification (MV252).

A vehicle to drive during the test. The vehicle must be properly registered, inspected, insured and equipped, and must be in good working order.

Motorcycle applications must bring an additional vehicle and driver to transport the license examiner during the test.

At the time of the road test, all front seat belts must be in working order. The passenger side belt, for the examiner’s use, must be readily available and clean.

A person at least 18 years of age who holds a license valid for operating the test vehicle.

Be There On Time!

If you know ahead of time that you won’t be able to keep your road test appointment, it must be canceled at least 24 hours before the time of the test. Otherwise, you will have to pay the DMV a rescheduling fee.
